Why Popguroll Chose Asynchronous Over Real-Time

I built Popguroll. I also scrapped real-time multiplayer twice.

We run on lean infrastructure. Every live match means more servers, more bandwidth, more monitoring. And we’re not a studio with VC cash burning holes in our pockets.

Server costs would’ve doubled. Not maybe. Not eventually. Right away.

Our anti-cheat system verifies solo runs (not) live duels. It checks timestamps, movement patterns, and input consistency after you finish. That design doesn’t scale to real-time without rebuilding everything.
